Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy approved CEM and CEA Certifications as Qualification for Energy Auditors

The Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy recently released at the Official Government Gazette – OGG Issue 4508/30.12. 2016, a Ministerial Decision (MD) in regards to the qualifications and certification schemes for energy auditors, the energy audits and energy audits registry. According to Article 4 of the MD, referring to the energy auditors’ qualifications, Certified Energy Manager International (CEMI) and Certified Energy Auditor International (CEAI) certifications, provided by the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) are among the approved certifications of the legislated point system which is incorporated to the national framework for energy auditors.

The Ministerial Decision is as an explanatory legislative act of Article 10 of Law 4342/2015 which refers to the Energy Audits and Energy Management Systems. According to the provisions of this Article, all Greek large companies are obligated to implement continuous energy audits every four years or to establish an energy or environmental management system as an alternative compliance path. The aforementioned legislative framework is the result of the national obligation for alignment with the Article 8 of the EU Energy Efficiency Directive (2012/27/EU).  

Consequently, the certifications provided by AEE are expected to be adopted by Greek engineers since a “new market” is created and new domains of expertise are requested.

The first CEM and CEA training programs for Greek engineers will be announced soon alongside to the announcement of the AEE Greek Chapter development, which is an initiative of INZEB – Institute of Zero Energy Buildings in association with and the support of distinguished professors and experts from the Decision Support Systems Laboratory of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens.
