AEE Programs Recognized for Ireland's Energy Audit Scheme

Association of Engineers’ CEM® and CEA® Programs recognized for Registered Energy Auditors for Ireland’s Energy Audit Scheme

The Irish government has recognized the Certified Energy Manager International (CEMI) and Certified Energy Auditor International (CEAI) qualifications, provided by the Association of Energy Engineers, as meeting the industry qualification requirements of the Irish regulation SI426, to implement Article 8 (4-6) of the EU Energy Efficiency Directive (2012/27/EU).

Government transposition of the Article 8 (4-6) of the EU Energy Efficiency Directive (2012/27/EU). requiring large undertakings to have energy audits undertaken by competent persons,  is contained in the Irish regulation SI426.

The agency of the Irish state tasked with implementation and oversight of this scheme is the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) and they have recently opened their own register of competent persons qualified and approved to undertake these audits.

The SEAI requirements have laid down core requirements for individuals applying to be on the register of auditors and also places additional requirements related to recognition in the energy field.

This registration process therefore recognizes professionals holding the CEMI or CEAI credential as having the required competencies to assist large organizations to reduce their energy spending and improve their impact on the environment in a practical and cost effective manner. AEE has over 17,000 current CEM and CEA professionals worldwide.

AEE’s certification programs are truly internationally recognized.  AEE’s long standing mission “to promote the scientific and educational interests of those engaged in the energy industry and to foster action for sustainable development” through AEE chapter activities and training and certification programs assist in developing individuals of the highest standard.  In fact the strength of the program can be seen where in assessing the CEM and CEA against the recently written standards PAS 51215 Competencies of a Lead Energy Assessor or the European Standard EN16247-5 Part 5 – Competencies for Energy Auditors, the CEM and CEA can be seen to meet and exceed all of these requirements showing the strength and depth of the programs developed by AEE

According to Al Thumann, CEM, PE, Executive Director of AEE, “The Certified Energy Manager (CEM) program started in 1981 and continues to grow in importance around the world, the recognition in Ireland is another fine example why individuals should become CEMs and take advantage of new opportunities in the energy management arena.  The Certified Energy Auditor (CEA) program will also be recognized as part of this scheme. We urge individuals to become CEAs and CEMs to advance their competitive edge in the marketplace.”

The President of the AEE Ireland Chapter, Derek Mullins, is especially proud of the recognition given to Ireland as the Irish Chapter of AEE was the first Western European Chapter of AEE and retains strong links with its AEE colleagues worldwide.

The Association of Energy Engineers is a 501(c)(6) non-profit professional organization that specializes in training, membership development, chapter development, and certification for professionals practicing in the fields of energy management, renewable energy and green buildings.
